Overview

A Different Side of Morocco's Mountains

Jbel Saghro is a rugged mountain massif in southern Morocco, where rocky plateaus, dramatic cliffs, deep valleys and desert-edge landscapes create a very different experience from the higher alpine environment of the High Atlas.

The massif rises gradually from the surrounding valleys into a landscape of distinctive rock formations, mountain passes and open plateaus. Its highest summit, Amalou n'Mansour, reaches approximately 2,712 metres, but the character of Saghro comes from the variety of terrain encountered throughout the journey.

Trekking here is also a journey through a living mountain culture. Amazigh communities, shepherds, seasonal pastoral routes and traditional knowledge remain connected to the landscape, adding a human dimension to the mountains.

When to Trek Saghro

Saghro's dry mountain climate makes it particularly attractive during the cooler months. Winter offers some of the best conditions for exploring the massif, while spring and autumn provide excellent alternatives.

Cooler temperatures return to the mountains, making autumn a comfortable period for long days on the trail and exploring the rocky valleys of Saghro.

The Mountains Decide

Seasonal patterns are useful when planning a Saghro trek, but mountain conditions can change from one week to another. Wind, temperature, rainfall and local trail conditions can all influence the experience.

Our guides monitor conditions throughout the expedition and can adapt daily stages, camps and route choices when necessary. The priority is always a safe and enjoyable journey through the massif.

A good level of fitness and previous experience with multi-day walking is recommended. The expedition involves several hours of walking each day over uneven and sometimes rocky mountain terrain.

Terrain

Expect rocky paths, mountain passes, open plateaus, valleys and uneven ground. The terrain changes throughout the expedition, so comfortable hiking footwear and good preparation are important.

Accommodation

The journey combines local accommodation where appropriate with mountain camping. Nights in the mountains are an important part of experiencing the remote character of Saghro.

Is the Saghro trek difficult?+

The difficulty depends on the route, season and daily stages. An eight-day Saghro expedition involves several hours of walking each day over rocky and uneven terrain, so a good level of fitness and preparation is recommended.

What is the best time to trek Saghro?+

October through April is generally the most suitable period, with winter being particularly popular for multi-day trekking because of the cooler conditions. Weather can still vary, so routes are adapted when necessary.

How high is the Saghro Massif?+

The highest point of the massif is generally given as approximately 2,712 metres at Amalou n'Mansour. Despite being lower than the High Atlas, the terrain can still feel remote and demanding because of its rocky landscape and exposed mountain terrain.

Is camping part of the Saghro trek?+

Yes. Mountain camping is an important part of the multi-day Saghro experience. Depending on the itinerary, the journey can also include local accommodation where appropriate.

Do I need previous trekking experience?+
