M'Goun Trek:
Exploring Morocco's Central High Atlas

Discover the M'Goun Massif through long mountain ridges, remote valleys, high passes and traditional villages in Morocco's central High Atlas.

The M'Goun Massif offers one of Morocco's best long-distance mountain experiences. Its broad ridges, deep valleys and remote villages create a landscape that feels expansive and adventurous, while the routes offer a quieter alternative to the more heavily travelled Toubkal trails.

01 / THE MASSIF

Discovering the M'Goun Mountains

M'Goun is one of the great mountain massifs of Morocco's central High Atlas. Rather than one dominant summit experience, the region offers a network of ridges, valleys, gorges and traditional routes.

This makes it particularly rewarding for multi-day trekking, where the landscape gradually changes from one day to the next.

02 / RIDGES

Long High Ridges and Mountain Passes

The M'Goun region is known for broad mountain ridges and high passes. Walking along these elevated routes gives trekkers a strong sense of scale and exposure to the surrounding Atlas.

Weather and terrain can change quickly at altitude, so route planning needs to take the conditions and the abilities of the group into account.

03 / VALLEYS

From High Mountains to Village Valleys

One of the strengths of a M'Goun trek is the contrast between high mountain terrain and the valleys below. Trails descend into areas where agriculture, villages and traditional mountain life become central to the journey.

This creates a natural rhythm: climb through the mountains, cross a pass, descend into a valley and continue towards another community.

04 / REMOTE TREKKING

A Quieter Alternative to Toubkal

M'Goun generally feels more remote than the classic Toubkal route. The sense of travelling through a large mountain region over several days is one of its greatest attractions.

For trekkers who have already experienced Toubkal or simply want a deeper mountain journey, M'Goun is a natural next step.

05 / PREPARATION

What to Expect on a M'Goun Trek

A multi-day M'Goun journey requires good general fitness and the ability to walk for several consecutive days. Daily distances and elevation can vary according to the route and current conditions.

Good footwear, layered clothing, sun protection, hydration and a comfortable pack are essential. The most important preparation, however, is being ready for changing mountain conditions.
